HOBY’s Leadership For Service program was designed in 1996, the program was formally adopted by HOBY International‘s Board of Trustees as part of our three-year strategic long-range plan. HOBY International piloted the program with 400 students in 1997, and refined it based on the results of an external evaluation. In 1999 it became nationally required of all seminar sites and is being implemented with help from our strategic partners, including America’s Promise and Farmers Insurance Group. This year, HOBY will have 9,000 students throughout the country giving back a minimum of 900,000 hours of service to their communities every year. In fact, in the last year, our leading alumni collectively performed 226,994.7 hours of service, an economic equivalent of $5,107,380.70.

HOBY alumni are encouraged to continue logging all of their community service and volunteer experiences in the years following their participation in a CLeW, a State Leadership Seminar, and the World Leadership Congress (WLC). Central PA HOBY alumni are challenged to complete a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service, annually after their HOBY experience. There are a number of benefits of keeping your Leadership for Service (L4S) log up to date:

Alumni in their junior and senior years of high school are eligible for the HOBY L4S Challenge Award and the President’s Volunteer Service Award, if they serve and log at least 100 hours in the year following their HOBY experience.
Any alumnus who logs a total of 4,000 hours of service will receive the President’s Call to Service Award from HOBY.
In addition, the L4S log can be printed and used as an appendix for college applications, scholarship applications, internship applications, and other opportunities where alumni are asked to demonstrate their lifelong commitment to service.
